Having made a name for himself in District 9, Sharlto Copley has an excellent year ahead of him, with leading roles in Neill Blomkamp’s next film, Elysium, Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake, and the mysterious The Europa Report from director Sebastián Cordero.

The intriguing space thriller launched a viral website earlier in the year, and now the first teaser trailer has gone live, keeping the sense of mystery surrounding the film.

“A group of astronauts, handpicked from around the world, make the arduous journey to Jupiter’s frigid, glacial moon Europa in search of extraterrestrial life. The only thing more intimidating and unpredictable than the trip itself is what the team will encounter upon arrival…”

Copley stars alongside an international cast, headed up by Michael Nyqvist, Daniel Wu, Christian Camargo, Karolina Wydra, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., and Anamaria Marinca.

Cordero (Chronicles) is directing from a script by Philip Gelatt (The Bleeding), with Ben Browning (Ondine) and Kevin Misher (Public Enemies) producing.

No word yet on when we can expect The Europa Report to arrive in theatres, but here’s to hoping that it will be early in 2013, potentially following a debut at Sundance, where it will hopefully secure a wide international distribution. For now, here’s the first teaser trailer to whet your appetites.
